Biogradska Gora is a forest and national park in Montenegro, one of the last three major rainforests in Europe. The area consists of mountain peaks, glacial lakes and beech forests.novirednovired The national park has an area of 54 km². Untouched forest, large mountain slopes and peaks over 2,000 m above sea level, 6 glacial lakes, 5 of which are at an altitude of 1,820 meters and one easily accessible lowland lake, located at the entrance to the Park, Biograd Lake.novirednovired Biogradska Gora National Park contains a great diversity of flora and fauna. There are 26 different plant habitats with 220 different plants, 150 species of birds and 10 species of mammals that live in this park and there are 86 species of trees and shrubs in its forest. There are three species of trout and 350 species of insects in the waters of the park. One of the unique characteristics of the Park is its rainforest, Biogradska Gora (16 km²) with trees older than five hundred years. In the heart of the rainforest is Biograd Lake, the largest glacial lake in this National Park. The most common tree species around the lake are European beech, maple and European ash, and beech and silver fir on the slopes.novirednovired When Kolasin was liberated from Turkish rule in 1878, people from Morača and Rovac donated a part of the forest to the Montenegrin King Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš. This forest was known as the ‘Bumper of King Nicholas’. Biogradska Gora was declared a national park in 1952. Today, the park has developed an infrastructure for tourists, including a visitor center, hiking trails, camps and a restaurant. In summer it is popular for tourists looking for a cooler environment than the coast.
